Genesis 22 Version (NKJV) – (emphasis mine)
Abraham’s Faith Confirmed
Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!”
And he said, “Here I am.”
2 Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
This scripture always confused me. Why would God require Abraham to sacrifice his only son. That seems cruel.
In Bible College we had a subject about “Covenants”. Pastor Mark Hodgetts explained it to us this way:
God was in Covenant with Abraham (Genesis 17). The words “your only son” in Genesis are the same as those used in John 3:16:
John 3:16 The Message (MSG)
16 “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.”
“Land of Moriah” is the same area where Mount Zion is believed to have been and the same area Jesus was crucified.
Because Abraham was willing to give his only son to God on that hill, God could give His only Son, the Messiah, on that lone hill centuries later. In terms of covenant law, if one party was willing to give or gave something to the other covenant party, the other party had to (and was willing to) do the same.
So there it is again. The immeasurable love of God for us… for me. His rescue plan, from the very beginning.
